VeraCrypt is a free, open-source encryption tool for people who want stronger control over their data. It creates encrypted containers that appear as ordinary files but can hold large amounts of data protected by strong encryption. When a container is closed, its contents are unreadable without the correct password.
One of VeraCrypt's most interesting features is the hidden volume. A single container can contain two separate volumes, each opened with a different password. One password opens an outer volume, while the other opens a hidden volume stored within the same encrypted container.
This can provide plausible deniability in some situations, but it has limits. Encryption cannot erase evidence created elsewhere by your operating system, applications, backups, or online accounts. In practice, operational mistakes and system traces can matter just as much as the cryptography.
