I know we already have likes and reputation.
My suggestion would be to add a completely separate rating system alongside likes.
For example, people could rate it based on how they found it;
Good / Valid / Informative
Average / Mixed
Risky / Invalid / Outdated
Bad / Malware / Scam
Those ratings could then be combined into a coloured progress bar-like weighting system that gives a quick visual indication of how people found it.
So the like system still remains a simple appreciation metric, while the new system provides feedback about the actual validity and quality of the content. It shouldn't be tied to the profile in my opinion.
I think it helps smooth out the impact of old and invalid threads. Allowing users to know upfront what is the current status of it.
Even better yet: an opt in post option to receive subscription notifications to this system: say for example it falls under 50% in a given period. You receive a notification so you can lock it, or you could reupload files etc.
Let me know what you think, or what you would do differently?
